The LTS (Long Term Version) of TYPO3 12 is released recently. For three years, release 12.4 will be provided with security updates and bug fixes. A version you can rely on. For the mittwald blog, we interviewed TYPO3 CTO Frank Nägler, who told us what his top 5 features are, what practical functions you may not notice at first glance and why the update of the popular content management system is now worthwhile for you.

Interview with TYPO3 CTO Frank Nägler

Hello Frank! What are the biggest new features for you? Which feature do you like best?

There are so many new features in TYPO3 12 – there’s something for everyone. I can’t limit myself to a favorite feature. My personal top 5 are:

  1. CSP (Content Security Policy) is a feature that increases protection against XSS (Cross Site Scripting)
  2. Keyword „Connecting TYPO3“, i.e. the new extensions for WebHooks and the Message Queue
  3. The backend, wishes again much faster
  4. The new backend search
  5. The revised File List Module

You can see that there is something for all TYPO3 users: for the admins, the integrators, the developers and the editors. I would say an all-round successful v12 release.

Which feature are you personally proud of?

I am proud of the whole team with all the many contributors who make such a new major version possible. For me, this is the spirit of open source. Personally, of course, I am personally proud of the features that I also actively participated in, i.e. EXT:reactions and EXT:webhooks. But many more people have been involved here, too. For example, the webhooks are based. on the Message Queue Feature by Susanne Moog and many more pre-patches.

Which feature has been screwed on for a particularly long time?

Here are two things to mind.

On the one hand, the CKEditor upgrade to the current version. The upgrade was urgently needed to include the CSP feature (editor’s note: security function, e.g. B. recognized cross-site scripting or similar. It took a lot of time. Not all third-party plugins of extensions work fully yet, but that will change pretty much well over the next few weeks.

The other is the CSP feature itself, because this feature is essential for the security of the site. Oliver Hader had already started working on it after the Freeze feature of the v10 LTS. A lot of pre-patches were necessary to get closer to the big goal.

What innovation is perhaps underestimated at first glance?

The refactoring of the TypoScript parser is a thing that has taken several months. Lots of work that you do not directly “see”. Christian Kuhn has once again created a solid substructure here, which will greatly simplify life and maintenance in the future. A construction site for which you need a lot of enthusiasm and endurance.

Who should update now?

All of course! 😉
(Editor’s note: Please pay attention to the compatibility with your extensions and projects.)
It has become a great release: simpler user interface for editors, improved security, better performance and performance, and many new features. If you use an older version of TYPO3 and want to benefit from all the benefits, you should consider upgrading to version 12.
